James van Riemsdyk has bounced back nicely after missing half the season last year due to injury.  He is currently third on the team in scoring with 24 points and could be available on the trade market if you are willing to pay a hefty price.

Elliotte Friedman wrote in his latest 30 Thoughts column for Sportsnet that van Riemsdyk could be had for the right price.  He is reporting that teams that call the Leafs for JVR are being told “If you’re serious, ante up.” Van Riemsdyk will be an unrestricted free agent this summer and the Leafs may decide to try and get something for him now if they don’t want pay big bucks this summer.

“Van Riemsdyk is a scorer, he’s going to cash in somewhere. Toronto’s cap situation is pretty good for a couple of years, until the likes of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander need their next contracts.

So that will be the decision. If they decide to deploy their wealth elsewhere, it’s going to be on the blue line. Van Riemsdyk could get you that help. But his value drops if you’re trading him with free-agency looming. So that’s why I think it’s gone from “No,” to “What have you got for us?””

Do you think the Maple Leafs will trade James van Riemsdyk before the March 1 trade deadline?
