Well that didn't take long.
Just a couple of days after being traded to the Carolina Hurricanes, Patrick Marleau is now a free agent.
Indication is that the veteran winger will likely sign a cheap veteran contract with the San Jose Sharks.
The Leafs traded Marleau to Carolina over the weekend along with a first round pick and 2020 seventh round pick for the Carolina Hurricanes 2020 sixth round pick.
Marleau was a fan favourite and mentor in Toronto, however his contract was way too heavy for the team with Mitch Marner, Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson needing new contracts.
The Carolina Hurricanes will buyout forward Patrick Marleau. Since Marleau is on a 35+ contract, they will still have his full $6.25 million cap hit for 2019/20, but will have no cap hit in 2020/21. Marleau will make $3,416,667 ($3M SB+$416k BS) in 2019/20 & $416,667 in 20/21. pic.twitter.com/pCzBNJfjzk
