While the rumors have died down a bit lately, some are still claiming that New York Islanders soon to be UFA John Tavares could sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
It would be pretty surprising considering that William Nylander, Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner will all need to have their contracts addressed whether this summer or next.
However the Athletic's Arthur Staple believes that the Leafs sit on top of Tavares' list:
"It’s long been believed that the Kings and the Leafs would be his preferred destinations if he could choose... The Leafs may be the wild card — they could afford Tavares at $11 million per now... If they can make a pitch, the thinking is Tavares will listen to his hometown team"
The Leafs do need to address Nylander's contract this year, however they could hold off on Matthews and Marner until next summer. Toronto would be able to afford Tavares and his possible $11million next year, but after that would be an extremely tight squeeze.
Do you think the Leafs have any shot at signing Tavares?
