The Toronto Maple Leafs have St. Louis Blues' defenseman Alex Pietrangelo at the top of the target list and they might be getting closer.
Pietrangelo will be UFA this offseason and multiple reports have GM Kyle Dubas ready to break the bank for the 30 year old defenseman similar to how he did with John Tavares.
However during free agency it might be hard for the Leafs to match an offer from teams loaded with cap space.
That's why Dubas might be willing to strike early.
According to Howard Berger, the Leafs are currently discussing a trade with the Blues.
Berger doesn't reveal any other details, but it's important to remember that the Leafs and Blues did discuss a Pietrangelo-Nylander deal back in late 2018. A deal would give the Leafs a head start on negotiating with Pietrangelo and of course a hefty return for St. Louis would mean Pietrangelo wants to sign in Toronto.
Could this deal be back on the table?
#Leafs and St. Louis are talking as per source. Could it involve Alex Pietrangelo's negotiating rights? Perhaps William Nylander? Frederik Andersen? Stay tuned.
